Easter Lilies Toxic to Cats!

All parts of the lily plant are considered toxic to cats and consuming even small amounts can be life threatening. Within a few hours of ingestion of the lily plant, a cat may vomit, become lethargic or develop a lack of appetite. These signs continue and worsen as kidney damage progresses. Without prompt and proper treatment by a veterinarian, the cat may develop kidney failure in 36 to72 hours.

I continue to be surprised at the number of people who do not know that the Easter Lily is one of the most toxic plants to cats, and how the plants are not labeled with warnings! This time of year, every grocery store has huge displays of Easter candy, baskets, egg decorating kits and yes, Easter Lilies...all ready to be put in the homes of unsuspecting cat owners!

There are many nice alternatives to having lilies in the house (most lilies are toxic to cats, but not seen inside homes as often). Orchids, Easter cactus and violets are options, as are lovely artificial silk lilies.

  1. Very good advice! All plants that come into our house are all put out of reach cause our mommy is a worry wart. She won't even think of bringing in a Easter Lily.

  5. This is a very good and worthy cautionary announcement, missie Teri.
A lot of people will be bringing these plants home after church on Sunday and they should keep them outside or give them to a friend.
Mom thinks Easter Lilies smell horrible anyway.
I like my plastic eggs and Snoopys that mom gave me. I also have to baskets to hide my toys!

I hope you and all of the kitties and kittens have the very nicest week-end ever!
Please give each kitty and kitten a headbonk from me! I would ask for for you to also give my new orange kitten a lick on the head... but you can let Uncle Disco or Uncle Brighton do that for me.

  8. Thank you for sharing this information. All lillies are toxic to cats.

Because mum also has parrots who like to chew plants, we don't have any toxic houseplants.

  9. Thanks so much for posting this! You are right that lots of people don't know this. We grow lilies in our yard but never bring them inside (Tasha will eat any plant within her reach.)
