Babies have arrived!
With a sigh of both relief, and sadness, that I gratefully announce the arrival of Coco's babies! It was a worrisome week, waiting for these babies to arrive--not wanting them to come too early but fearing something might be wrong, when Coco had a spot of discharge one day about 10 days ago.
But the tests we did on her were normal and even this morning, our vet could hear heartbeats and we could still feel movement, and I am happy we have two live little boycats and Coco is a very good mom and we have our fingers crossed they will grow into sweet Mancats!
She was carrying 4 kittens, but the first two were stillborn, a red tabby boy and a black girl. Then she delivered two live kittens, a red tabby boy and a cream tabby boy. They all weighed in at pretty good weights and the two stillborn kittens looked normal, but the girl very small at 51 grams, but the boy was bigger, 70 grams. I will have them necropsied so I know if there was a cause for their deaths. It will take about 2-3 weeks to get those test results back.
The cream boy weighs 84 grams--a good weight, and the red tabby boy weighs 61 grams--small but vigorous! (60 grams is about 2 ounces, so you have an idea of how tiny they are). All the kittens were born within an hour and Coco had an easy delivery with each one. The two boys have nursed and are strong and Coco seems relaxed and has eaten, so I can relax a little now and have a good nights sleep tonight, and hope that Coco has a good night, too and by the morning has settled into caring for her new babies.
Now I have the difficult decision to make, choosing the families the last two Furrydance kittens will share their lives with. Each of them are experienced Cornish Rex 'servants' so that's a 'plus'. All of them have other kitties, some of just one, and I think a Cornish Rex needs at least one kitty to keep it happy and entertained. Most of them have recently lost a special Cornish Rex and even with other cats in the house, are missing their presence. Two of them also have dogs and I know Cornish Rex and dogs are often the best of friends! Two of them would like a show quality kitten, too and for all of them, their cats are your 'kids'...
Over the next few months, I will get to know all the people on my waiting list better, get to meet all of them--some traveling to meet me and others living nearby who I have already met. When possible, I also like to visit their homes and meet their pets and those who live far away--photos of their home and other pets will help me 'see' where one of my kittens may live. And of course, these expectant parents can ask of me any and all questions and we can talk by phone frequently over the next few months, too.
And of course, I am good about taking photos and will be watching as their personalities develop to also guide me in choosing the best fit for both kitten and families, too. And here's one more photo of the newborns!

Concatulations to you and Coco for having two boy kittens! That is sad about the two stillborns. How many potential families are hoping to be chosen for these little guys?
ReplyDeleteAwww, they are so small!. I am sorry the other two did not survive!. This may sound dumb, but does Coco know the other two were stillborn? can she sense it? Also, does the mother cat know their litter is being given? Just asking since I've never gone thru this..
